NAICS Codes

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) was jointly conceived by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the U.S. Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC), Statistique Canada (Statistics Canada), and Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) as a standard for categorizing businesses as well as to supplant the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. SIC Codes

As noted by the U.S. Library of Congress (LOC), the NAICS "was conceived to replace the SIC code," and this occurred in 1997. Various agencies, such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as well as the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), still leverage the SIC system, and this can be seen via the U.S. SEC (https://www.sec.gov/search-filings/standard-industrial-classification-sic-code-list) and U.S. OSHA (https://www.osha.gov/data/sic-search) websites, respectively.

GICS Codes

According to S&P Global Inc., a provider of analytics, benchmarks, and financial information, the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS®) was developed in 1999 by its division, S&P Dow Jones Indices, and MSCI Inc. (formerly Morgan Stanley Capital International), another provider of analytics, benchmarks, and financial information. While the NAICS (which superseded the SIC) caters more to the business economy and regulatory, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) eligibility, and the tax communities, the GICS® caters more to the investment community. PSC

To facilitate the tracking of expenditures within the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS), the U.S. Government (USG) utilizes Product and Service Codes (PSCs). The PSC categories were established by the OMB and the Category Management Leadership Council (CMLC), which Acquisition.gov (the USG's online hub pertaining to the Federal Acquisition Regulation or FAR) defines as "a council of representatives that come from the agencies who comprise the majority of federal procurement spending."
